When I started my WordPress Journey back in 2010 I used a lot of free resources and training online to get up to speed with WordPress as well as skills in coding. Fast forward 10 years and we are now in a time where the lack of women in tech is being challenged and a lot of fantastic organisations are working on making sure that women are given the opportunity to develop their skills in tech.
So if you’re ready to start your tech journey and want to start exploring your training options, then here’s a brief summary of a few fantastic organisations working to reduce the gender gap in tech.
Tech Mums – Set up by Tech Evangelist Dr Sue Black. the first #techmums pilot took place in 2012 with the aim of inspiring confidence in mums with the use of technology. It was relaunched in 2018 as a direct response to the noticeable lack of female representation in the Technology Industry, and now offers a free online course to support women in tech.
Code First Girls – A not for profit social enterprise launched in 2013 to help address the gender imbalance in the tech industry. Code First: Girls offers free in-person part-time coding courses for female/non binary identifying young individuals across the UK and Ireland.
Digital Mums – Launched in 2014 to challenge maternal discrimination, Digital Mums upskill women with in-demand social media and digital skills so they can find rewarding and flexible careers.
23 Code Street – Launched in 2016 and designed to create a more diverse technology industry, 23 Code Street is a coding school for women with face to face as well as online courses. In addition, for every paying student they teach digital skills to women in the slums of India
Tech Returners – Set up in 2017 to tackle the skills shortage in tech by removing the barriers that returners of all ages, genders and life circumstances face after a career break, Tech Returners offers a free 15 week course for returners passionate in developing a career in tech.
